Synopsis
Hring was not sure what woke him. He listened, but heard nothing. He tried to move and found he could not. He tried to call out to Halvdan, but could not speak. He saw a stirring among the trees. Two figures came walking, almost gliding, soundless across the glade. When they were near he saw that they were both tall women. One wore a cloak, a cowl hiding her features. the other was young and bareheaded. Her fair hair fell below her waist in two plaits as thick as a child's arm. Her deep-shadowed eyes regarded him with icy detachment.
"Will he do, Mother?" said the fair one.
"He will do marvelous well," said the other. Her hand rose, and sh bent to touch Hring. Her finger traced a design on his brow, and where the nail touched, his skin was so cold that it burned.
"The seal of our wyrd is upon him, now," said the cowled one. It was the second time he had heard the old word this night. Christians weren't supposed to use it. But then, he thought, he was not in Christian land, and the church had done with him. The woman pointed at him.
"Sealed to me are you, wolfshead, to do my will. It may be soon or it may be late, buy your wyrd and mine are entwined like mating serpents." Then the women faded back into the trees.
