Random quote: "Swords, Lances, arrows, machine guns, and even high explosives have had far less power over the fates of nations than the typhus louse, the plague flea, and the yellow-fever mosquito. Civilizations have retreated from the plasmodium of malaria, and armies have crumbled into rabbles under the onslaught of cholera spirilla, or of dysentery and typhoid bacilli. Huge areas have been devastated by the trypanosome that travels on the wings of the tsetse fly, and generations have been harassed by the syphilis of a courtier. War and conquest and that herd existence which is an accompaniment of what we call civilization have merely set the stage for these more powerful agents of human tragedy." ― Hans Zinsser, Rats, Lice and History - (Added by: Acknud) |

Uber User Posts: 1057 | Hi WWEnders, This is just a reminder that we have 3 weeks left in 2019. Many of the Roll-Your-Own Challenges end on December 31st, so you may want to go in and make sure that you've got your challenges updated before the calendar flips over. And as always, remember that there is no obligation to finish any Challenge, and no one will be checking up on you, keeping score, or looking askance at your progress (or lack thereof). Challenges are personal and purely for fun. So if real life happened to get in the way (as it often does), that's okay, you can try another Challenge in the new year, or you can create your own version of the challenge with a 2-year span, giving you more time to finish the Challenge. Best wishes for a good holiday season, with much joy and laughter with your loved ones. illegible

Uber User Posts: 1057 | mgkurilla - 2019-12-13 5:16 PM Just ran across Heinlein offering (from 1952) which doesn't seem to be in the database: The Year of the Jackpot Hi mgkurilla, That's because this is a novelette which has never been a finalist for an award or appeared in a Year's Best anthology and it's never been available as a standalone printed work, so it's not something we would include on its own in the database. It's part of the Heinlein collection The Menace from Earth and the anthology Science Fiction for People Who Hate Science Fiction, which are in the database.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 557 Location: Great Lakes, USA | Can you add The Horses Know Trilogy by Lynn Mann? They seem to be set in a dystopian future society with telepathic horses. I have just started the first one and I think they would qualify as speculative fiction. Thanks! Edited by daxxh 2019-12-25 1:15 PM

Uber User Posts: 141 Location: Carrollton, TX | dalex - 2019-12-25 2:29 PM (Sorry for all the recent requests. I'm working on my 2020 Reading Plan!) We've got you covered. For your 2020 reading pleasure I've added: Unnatural Magic by C.M. Waggoner The Mermaid's Daughter by Ann Claycomb Lost and Wanted by Nell Freudenberger Follow Me to Ground by Sue Rainsford Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstances by Ruth Emmie Lang XX by Angela Chadwick I've skipped Black Rabbit Hall for now. Can anyone confirm speculative elements in it? It's not in the ISFDB, and the review on Amazon that labels it "Equal parts romance, mystery, and historical fiction," has me wondering. Veteran Posts: 273 Location: behind the 4th wall | Thanks so much slinkyboy! RE Black Rabbit Hall - It's tagged as gothic genre on goodreads and the synopsis mentions ghosts so I thought it might fit here on WWEnd but it's totally ok if you think it doesn't!
