Dan Simmons (born April 4, 1948 in Peoria, Illinois) is an American author most widely known for his Hugo Award-winning science fiction series, known as the Hyperion Cantos, and for his Locus-winning Ilium/Olympos cycle.

He spans genres such as science fiction, horror and fantasy, sometimes within the same novel: a typical example of Simmons' ability to intermingle genres is Song of Kali (1985), winner of World Fantasy Award.[1] He is also a respected author of mysteries and thrillers, some of which feature the continuing character Joe Kurtz.

I find Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion the best novels.

I loved the Hyperion Cantos.

I found Hyperion by reading some Liston great sci-if series, bought the first book from Borders. Since it was such a cliffhanger I immediately rented the rest of the series from my library. Part of the way through Endymion he makes a subtle reference to something that happens to be near where I live. After doing a little bit of research I found out that I actually live down the road from where Dan Simmons went to college.

I asked around a bit and got his email address, and sent him a letter about how much I enjoyed the Cantos and how extraordinary I found it to be that he grew up near the same place where I did. He sent a delightful reply, making my day. Seems like a nice guy, and is certainly a great writer.
