Biography
Justine Larbalestier is an Australian science fiction historian, critic and author of young-adult fiction. Her surname has been pronounced in several different ways. She says online that Lar-bal-est-ee-air is correct.
Larbalestier was born and raised in Sydney. She earned her undergraduate and postgrad degrees at the University of Sydney. Her first nonfiction book, The Battle of the Sexes in Science Fiction, is considered required reading for anyone who wishes to learn how women in the genre have been portrayed over the past 80 years.
In 2001 she married the American science fiction writer Scott Westerfeld, whom she met in New York City while she was researching her PhD thesis. She now alternates residence between Sydney, where she gardens, boxes, and watches too much cricket, and New York City, where she misses cricket a lot and wanders about public parks hoping they'll let her do some gardening.
