The setting - Mexico City, 1988 and 2009, and the atmosphere, lift this far above the standard emo-teen novel. I'm not familiar with a lot of the music, but, hey, I was a music-loving emo teen myself, so it was very easy to relate. I had expected the fantasy/paranormal aspect - the teens' discovery of their ability to use music to make wishes come true, including some violent ones - to take more of a center stage than the relationship drama, but despite this, it was a unique and satisfying read.
