I was obsessed with this book until it devastated me at the end there. Who am I kidding, I'm still obsessed, albeit heartbroken.

The character work was spectacular, felt like I was playing DnD with the best of the best.

Sits well on its own even while beginning a new series. There are loose ends but nothing so cliff-hangery that you'll be cursing the day Abercrombie sat down to write this book. Although, that being said, I am already impatiently awaiting the next instalment.

I loved Grave Empire, by Richard Swan, and was hailing it as my fantasy of the year, but I think this may have blown it out of the water. Both are great reads but this plays on fantasy tropes that I loved as a teenager all while maturing them and twisting them in such a way that they were familiar and yet still so, so refreshing.

This was my first Abercrombie, and I must confess I am converted for life. So much fun.
