I don't usually read book series one right after the other, but I did in this case, starting with Penric's Demon, then Penric and the Shaman, and finally this one, Penric's Mission. Each is an adventure of the main character Penric. They do occur in chronological order so it's probably best they be read in order, but it's certainly not essential. Mission is perhaps the best of the three, marginally.
The setting is in the culture of the five gods, of which there are previous books. The character of Penric is reminiscent of that of Miles Vorkosigan, the protagonist from a completely different series of books. The stories are told in Bujold's characteristic style, with a wink and a wry smile.
