Please add Susan Palwick to the database. I will be reading " Necessary Beggar" and will want to write a review.
Thank you in advance,

| This challenge gave me the spur to register here. A long time lover of SF (Patrick Troughton was my first doctor - ahem) but I was often frustrated by the limited roles females (and indeed anyone other than alpha males) played in many of the stories I read. Thank goodness times have changed (mostly) and there is so much more genre goodness to enjoy. I hadn't seen your list of female authors but will be using it in the future. Great to see the wonderful (and much mourned) Margaret Mahy there. Was surprised that Elizabeth Knox was not included. While I didn't warm to her most famous novel (The Vinter's Luck) but YMMV, I loved her Dreamhunter/Dreamquake novels (mature YA) and Daylight was a pretty decent vampire tale.
Anyway, sorry to ramble. I am keen to have a stab at this challenge and look forward to exploring some of these authors' work.

Location: Dallas, Texas | Hey everyone, let's use this thread for author requests for the WoGF. I moved up from the general suggestions forum. Note: We're missing tons of authors and tons of books. In the interest of time, and my sanity, please save your author requests for those specific authors you're going to read going to read next. We've got a whole year to get in as many as we can and I'd rather focus on the ones that people are wanting to tag right away so they won't have to wait. Thanks for your patience! |

Location: Washington state | Since you mentioned above that Susan Palwick is on the list to be added, would you please add her novel "Shelter" while you're adding her? I'd like to include it for my challenge.
I'd also like to request Molly Gloss (many good books but specifically "Wild Life," which won that elusive Tiptree award) and Hiromi Goto (whose "The Kappa Child" also won a Tiptree.) If you get around to adding that awards list, they'll be added anyhow, but if the list doesn't get added for a while, I'd still like to read those two authors.
Another: Jessica Amanda Salmonson, whose trilogy - Tomoe Gozen, The Golden Nagata, and Thousand Shrine Warrior - from the 1980s is regarded as some of the finest alt-Japan fantasy/alternate history out there (and which is scowling at me from my shelf for neglecting it so long.)

I've been wanting to read something by Hiromi Goto, so I would be grateful if you added her. |

Location: Dallas, Texas | Wow! I knew we'd get lots of requests for new authors but so many so fast? We've got our work cut out for us. Here is the list of authors, including some specific book titles, that we've gotten so far. I hope I haven't missed any. They're in no particular order though I've moved a few to the top that I want to get to sooner rather than later. It'll take a long time to get through this list of 63 new authors and their books but we have the whole year ahead. I'll add any more requests you have to the list but you'll need to tell me specifically that you're currently reading a book if you want me to move it up the list so you can tag it for this month. | Is this the correct place for requesting authors be added to the list for the challenge? If yes, then could this be clarified in the thread title? Or are you not wanting to encourage people to make suggestions.
If I have come to the right place then I would like to humbly request that Leigh Bardugo be added. Following repeated recommendations I have just read her debut title Shadow and Bone, the first book in her YA trilogy. I believe the rights have been sold for a potential movie (link below) and you can see good things said about her book all over the net.

| Some more requests, all POC/non-white authors, no particular rush for me:
Karin Lowachee -- she's already in your database, but you're missing Burndive (which is book #2 of a trilogy; you already have books #1 & #3) and The Gaslight Dogs.
Michelle Sagara -- you don't have any books by her, under any of her names (Michelle Sagara, Michelle West, and Michelle Sagara West). The first books of her various series are Into the Dark Lands, Hunter's Oath, The Broken Crown, The Hidden City, Cast in Shadow, and Silence.
Alaya Dawn Johnson -- you don't have any books by her; the first novels in her series are Racing the Dark, Moonshine, and, coming out this year, The Summer Prince.
Nisi Shawl -- not in your database; her only book to date is the short story collection Filter House.
Larissa Lai -- not in your database; When Fox is a Thousand and Salt Fish Girl.
Angelica Gorodischer -- an Argentinian author not in your database; thus far her only book translated into English is Kalpa Imperial, but she has another coming out in a couple weeks from Small Beer Press called Trafalgar.
Cynthia Leitich Smith -- though she writes mostly realistic YA, Tantalize is an urban fantasy novel.

| Melissa Scott has a fantasy series which I'd love to see added:
Point of Hopes (with Lisa Barnett)
Point of Knives
Point of Dreams (also with Lisa Barnett)
She also co-wrote "Lost Things" with Jo Graham. Could that be added as well?
(Sorry! I meant this as a reply to the Melissa Scott entry posted above. Still learning my way around.)
Also, could Andrea K. Hst "And All the Stars" be added? I have a review ready.

May I suggest adding Jane Gaskell? Here is a list of her books on Goodreads. China Miville posted a quote from one of her novels on his blog today and piqued my interest in her writing. I would add Strange Evil and her Atlan series books (I'd love to read the first one, The Serpent, for this challenge).

Don't be too surprised at what we're missing. We built the site around the awards to begin with so we're skewed towards the male authors quite heavily. The WoGF is part of our effort to correct the imballance. We're getting better with all these recomendations but it just takes time. Thanks! SarahPi - 2013-01-25 9:11 PM Hi there, Some of N.K. Zoori - 2013-01-27 7:51 AM First of all, this list is a great idea! I was surprised not to find P. C. Hodgell - God Stalk trilogy, as suggested by Engelbrecht. She is one of the jewels yet to be discovered for some and appreciated by many fantasy lovers. Thanks. Thanks! I'm glad you found your way to WWEnd. See comment above about surprises We have God Stalk and Dark of the Moon on the do list. Both are noms for the Mythopoetic Award which is one of our top priorities since it will help us with WoGF authors a great deal. See the conversation about the Mytho here. controuble - 2013-01-30 8:24 AM P.N. Elrod appears to be missing from the Women's list, too - she wrote the Jack Fleming, vampire detective books. I've got the Vampire Files on the to do list now, thanks. 12 volumes! oddrid - 2013-02-01 2:17 PM Hi! New user here. This challenge is what spurred me to make an account! May I suggest adding Jane Gaskell? Here is a list of her books on Goodreads. China Miville posted a quote from one of her novels on his blog today and piqued my interest in her writing. I would add Strange Evil and her Atlan series books (I'd love to read the first one, The Serpent, for this challenge ). Thanks! Welcome to WWEnd and the WoGF! I've not heard of Jane Gaskell before so thanks for the suggestion. I've got the Atlan Saga, Strange Evil and King's Daughter on the to do list now. Thanks everyone for the author and book suggestions. We'll get another batch added as soon as we can. |

| Those are on our list now. Don't be too surprised at what we're missing. We built the site around the awards to begin with so we're skewed towards the male authors quite heavily. The WoGF is part of our effort to correct the imballance. We're getting better with all these recomendations but it just takes time. Thanks!
Oh, I'm not surprised in general - I'm surprised specifically because Black Juice won not one but two World Fantasy Awards but wasn't on your list.
I can understand you not including books just because a story in them won a WFA - it would be nightmarish to work out which stories were in which collection accurately (and then what about stories incorporated into novels?) - but I really do think that you ought to - not as part of this WOGF project, but just as part of the basic 'list of award-winning books' project - include winners/nominees of Anthology and Collection awards as well as just Best Novel. Collection, at the very least, since it's not even always clear what's a collection and what's a novel! [Quite a few award-winning novels are really linked short-story collections.] |

| I just glanced at the wikipedia page and assumed any title not in quotation marks and with publisher info was a novel. That might have been misleading.

| I think you are right about the quotation marks. At least it hold true for Le Guin. But a lot of the novels have won for other things that are in WWE and the winners for the last 2 years are in anyway. I count at least 15 winners that are in the db already. |

The Uninvited is on the list now, Graham, and boy does it sound creapy as all hell! I'm looking forward to your review. A seven-year-old girl puts a nail-gun to her grandmother''s neck and fires. An isolated incident, say the experts. The experts are wrong. Across the world, children are killing their families. Is violence contagious? Hesketh Lock is tasked with finding out. Collections and anthologies are something that I'm rather eager to get to but right now we have our hands full just dealing with novels. Still several awards we want to get in first before we branch out of the novel categories. We do put in lots of collections and anthos, especially if requested, but there's much to be done before we can shift our focus for the awards and lists. booksihgal, justifiedsinner and JamesVirgil: Tiptree is on the shortlist of awards especially since it will also support the WoGF - much like the Mythopoetic Award that we're working towards now. We'll have to find a way to deal with the short stories in the list but I'm sure we can come up with a solution when the time comes. |

I've ended up giving up about 2/3 of my reading time to work on the site but I've dropped some other hobbies to compensate for it a bit and I tend to gravitate towards shorter books now so I can dip into more authors. But you know, the next best thing to reading books is talking about them and there are other benefits gained in the trade off like all the great people from around the world I've met through WWEnd. It's a lot of work but I'm still having fun! |

I'd say this is a perfect novel if you wanted to learn the art of book to movie. See the movie, read this, and you can really see how the script was formed.
Admin. Howl seems to be the first of three books. The House of Many Ways is a direct sequel and Booklist says about Many Ways: Its been a long time coming, but Jones has finally returned to the madcap world of Howls Moving Castle (1986) and Castle in the Air (1991) with an equally rollicking, enchantment-filled tale. I guess Castle is set in the same universe. Great, another three for you. |

No, not yet. I have so many women authors on my TBR that are new to me, my list is almost full. But I am keeping that one spot for the random author open. After all, the year has only just started. I'll be looking out for all the women writers that will be added and probably have my boyfriend pick a random one for me. |

| I re-posted the comment I have on Women and Fantasy on Library Thing which caused quite a stir there. I also mentioned the WoGF challenge. It did elicit some criticism of WWE for the number of books missing. I have explained that you only have a small number of people adding books and don't allow users to enter their own books yet. The author author Janny Wurts was somewhat miffed that only 3 of her books are included and those co-authored with a man. She also exclaimed at the omission of Janet Morris. For anyone who's interested this is the link:

| Wow, my opinion of Janny Wurts just actually went down for that. Someone can't get as far as reading the FAQ...
"Why is my favorite author not in your database? What kind of site are you running here?!
This is one of the most asked questions we get, often in angry or accusatory tones. The simple answer is that your favorite author was not nominated for any of the awards or book lists we currently cover. That's it. There's no conspiracy to defraud your favorite of their rightful place in the annals of SF/F/H.
As we add more awards we'll be adding more authors along with them. Please be patient and try to understand that data collection is time consuming and often difficult. We like to think that with over 1,200 authors to choose from you might find a new favorite if you look around a bit."
Oh look! A site is doing something with plans to encourage people to read books by female authors they weren't familiar with, also allowing for more female authors to be added to their database. Let's get really angry because they don't have MY books! |

| I also think that those FAQs no longer apply because of the WoGFC. By adding lots of women authors most of whom are not award winners there are going to be authors who get miffed because they are excluded. |

Location: France | I am so unbelievably grateful that I found this site and this challenge. There are tons of authors missing - there always will be until people stop writing but I am amazed at the achievements of what I am assuming is a small number of people working for nothing in their own time to make life easier for me to explore a genre I love. |

| I don't think that makes Wurts' comments that much better. A quick look around would show that they've been adding books by female authors in general only since January, and the smartest thing to do would probably be, instead of chelping about it on another forum, signing up and suggesting some more books to add. Including her own.
Srsly, it's not that difficult a concept. Oh, a book I want to read/think should be included isn't here. Do I a) yell about it to other people somewhere else or b) sign up and help the site expand their database?
It mostly surprises me that she's aware of the issues surrounding SF/F and female authors, but then doesn't connect "women don't get published as easily" with "women don't win awards as easily" with "this site only added award nominees/winners pre-January 2013". It's not so much the site's problem then, unless they weren't doing anything to address it. And they are. Isn't that what this challenge is about?

Location: Dallas, Texas | Well, let's all cop a squat and roundly drek on the honest efforts of a handful of fans, and their growing community of followers, to build a site that celebrates genre fiction. Forget that this is a spare time hobby and that we're making a massive effort to improve the site in regards to equal coverage of women authors. Forget that we initiated a reading challenge with the expressed intent to shed light on that inequality and to engage our members in a constructive effort to promote ALL women authors. Forget that we've committed ourselves to adding any missing authors or books that our members request to our database in addition to our usual author and book updates. Forget that we're on pace to have well over 500 quality reviews of books by women authors for the challenge alone. Clearly we're just a bunch of assholes trying to keep Janny Wurts down. How dare we not have every frelling book by every frelling author in our database! My, oh, my. There's a lot of anger in that thread and some of it is affecting me. I'm going to go chill for a bit then I'll mosey on over to Library Thing and pose a few questions to our detractors. |

| Thanks for adding the Gemma Doyle stuff for Libba Bray. Given how extensive this forum is with numerous requests, I'm impressed with how quickly you're updating things.
I hate when people complain (and not even to the people who might make a difference) rather than trying to be part of the solution. It looks like someone explained the reasons that her umpteen books and those of others aren't all listed, but I don't see it completely sinking in in any practical way on that end. |

I didn't mean to stir things up by my post. I was hoping to promote the challenge as part of a general discussion on women and genre fiction. I think the initiative is great. I think Wurtz's anger is more a reaction to the state of genre publishing. I don't think she realises that the effort is ongoing to include women's authors and that this enhancement to the site only started two months ago.
I'm sure if you communicate with her, if she sees it in that light, she will chill out herself and having authors on your side can only be a plus for the site. |

Location: Gunnison, Colorado | I'm afraid to look at that thread! I was actually wondering if something like this might happen at some point, since the issue of gender in SF has been fraught for a long time, and discussions often seem to devolve into making assumptions about the motives of others in the conversation. You never know when you might unintentionally step into something. I made a comment on an SF Signal post a few days back expressing some disappointment about how the Nebula nominees have been trending more toward fantasy and away from SF over the years (a factual observation), and someone soon added a snarky comment about how the novel nominees were "girly" this year, which then led to a huge pile-on against SF fans who don't like women writers (!). (The criticism of the gender-biased comments was deserved, but I thought it was interesting that an SF vs. F discussion morphed almost immediately into male writers/fans vs. female writers/fans, when there's no necessary connection between those two dichotomies.) There are very important issues surrounding gender bias in SFF and publishing, but unfortunately the internet, which could be (and sometimes is) a chance to educate people about such issues, also lends itself to the proliferation of knee-jerk responses and judgments.
But, hey, don't they say that any publicity is good publicity?! |

Or I should say that our members were. We just set up the situation and you guys and gals have been killing it with the reviews and the blog posts and the book requests etc. Ya'll have taken it to a whole new level. It seems a bit silly to take us to task for not having every book and every female author there is but I guess it's easier to neg when you don't know the whole story than to try and support somebody else's effort in the same direction. I think we're all in this together, no? Well, while all the snark was going on over on LT we were busy adding more women authors and books: Evangeline Walton Mabinogi - Prince of Annwn - The Children of Llyr - The Song of Rhiannon - The Island of the Mighty: aka The Virgin and the Swine Libba Bray Gemma Doyle - A Great and Terrible Beauty - Rebel Angels - The Sweet Far Thing Liz Jensen The Uninvited Cassandra Rose Clarke Ananna and Naji - The Assassin's Curse - The Pirate's Wish The Mad Scientist's Daughter Jane Gaskell Atlan Saga - The Serpent - Atlan - The City - Some Summer Lands Strange Evil King's Daughter Margo Lanagan The Brides of Rollrock Island Black Juice Red Spikes Molly Gloss Outside the Gates The Dazzle of Day Wild Life Jessica Amanda Salmonson Tomoe Gozen - Tomoe Gozen - The Golden Naginata - Thousand Shrine Warrior Leigh Bardugo The Grisha - Shadow and Bone |

| First, thank you for everything you've done for making this challenge possible. I'm learning a lot about female authors, and I'm picking up books that I wouldn't have otherwise. This challenge is great.
Could you please add Wen Spencer to your database? She wrote the Elfhome series: http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/26546.Wen_Spencer
Thank you! |

| I just picked up A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan. Can I count this toward the Challenge? I notice that Brennan is on the list.
Thanks, |

Location: The Wilds of Washington | I read Madeleine L'Engle's A wrinkle in time for this month's book. You have it listed as the first of four books. I've discovered it's a quintet instead of quartet. Wrinkle in Time, Wind in the Door, Swiftly Titling Planet, Many Waters, and the fifth is An Acceptable Time. If you'd of asked me a year ago, I would've thought the thing was a trilogy. |

Thanks, A Natural History of Dragons is getting some great press lately. That cover is pretty sweet. How's the book so far? I'll add it to my list so you can tag it and let us all know how it turns out. gallyangel - 2013-03-06 3:04 PM I read Madeleine L'Engle's A wrinkle in time for this month's book. Right you are, gallyangel! There is some confusion on this one out on the interwebs but Wikipedia and the L'Engle website say it's book five so I'll get that one added soon. I hate an incomplete series. Trilogies have a funny way of growing past 3 volumes even years later. Happy reading everyone! |

Kind of like Eoin Colfer's And Another Thing is book six of the Hitchhiker trilogy. |

Location: UK | @ Rhonda - I loved Marissa Meyer's Cinder,a nice example of well written YA where romance is not at the centre of everything.Waiting impatiently for Scarlett to come out here in UK.We are often months behind US publication dates, and then waiting for the library to get it,and then wait my turn on the waiting list.....(sigh) I'll get it eventually. But second books can be tricky,I hope it is up to scratch.
Aarrgghh.Just checked, there is ONE copy among 39 libraries,so it may be quite a while before I get it! lol |

| I have a review of "Hidden City" by Michelle Sagara West ready to go whenever you get a chance to add her! (Mainly, because I had just picked up the book when I discovered this challenge, so I figured I'd keep going and make it my first read...) In the meantime, on to a new woman of genre fiction! Whee.
Michelle Sagara West series:
House Wars (The Hidden City, City of Night, House Name, Skirmish, Battle)
Sun Sword (The Broken Crown, The Uncrowned King ,The Shining Court, Sea of Sorrows, The Riven Shield, The Sun Sword)
The Sundered (Into the Dark Lands, Children of the Blood, Lady of Mercy, Chains of Darkness Chains of Light)

| I have a random question. Normally, when I click "read" on a book written by a female author, I have the option of clicking the box to apply it to the WoGF challenge. When I click on Robin Hobb's books, this doesn't seem to be happening: https://www.worldswithoutend.com/novel.asp?id=1150
Could you please look into this or let me know what I'm doing wrong?
Thank you! |

Thank you! Hi Kara, welcome to WWEnd and the WoGF! You can't add Robin Hobb/Megan Lindholm books because you've already got 12 authors picked for your challenge. That check box is disabled for authors not on your list. You'll have to un-pick someone else then add her to your list to re-activate the checkbox. |

Location: France | I am enjoying this challenge so much. Thanks for setting it. I feel like it has focused my reading for the year and where I initially wondered if I could manage 12 new authors in the year it seems I am well ahead of target.
The list you have is an excellent starting point but it has pushed me to look further afield too.
I have a review ready for 'Clutch by J. A. Huss' once you get a chance to add it.
Thanks for all the work and time you put into the site. |

Location: Michigan | I've picked up a couple of books by Miyuki Miyabe -- Brave Story (a manga) and The Book of Heroes. I'm not sure how you all feel about adding manga, and I haven't even started reading it at this point. The Book of Heroes is pretty interesting at 30 pages in, though -- it strikes me as a YA level, though the cover seems geared towards children. |

Yeah, I don't think we'll be adding manga to the site anytime soon. There's just too much to do in the space we're in now with novels, collections and anthologies etc. to branch out that far. I'm really starting to develop an interest in manga from gallyangel's excellent series though. In case you've not seen it we just posted another installment on the blog that you should check out. I'm easing into the genre with anime right now but someday I'll give a real manga a shot. And now for some books: Marie Brennan Doppelganger - Warrior - Witch Onyx Court - Midnight Never Come - In Ashes Lie - A Star Shall Fall - With Fate Conspire A Natural History of Dragons
Fiona Patton The Branion Realm - The Stone Prince - The Painter Knight - The Granite Shield - The Golden Sword Warriors of Estavia - The Silver Lake - The Golden Tower - The Shining City
Jennifer Fallon Second Sons - The Lion of Senet - Eye of the Labyrinth - Lord of the Shadows Tide Lords - The Immortal Prince - The Gods of Amyrantha - The Palace of Impossible Dreams - The Chaos Crystal
@Kata: We finally got Natural History of Dragons added for ya. I'm looking forward to your review! Hapy reading! |

Location: Michigan | That's fine -- I don't actually enjoy manga art, myself. There's something about the big eyes -- seems to have the opposite effect it's supposed to have on me. I mostly just checked it out to get a better idea of Miyuke Miyabe's work.
However, The Book of Heroes is a novel. Would you be able to add it? It seems to be the only thing I can get through my library of hers that's in English.

| This page is getting too long for me to scroll through to see if anybody else has requested this title, but is there any way you can add Point of Hopes, by Melissa Scott and Jill Barnett, to the database sooner rather than later? I read it this month and have my review written, just waiting for it to get in the database so I can add it.
Thanks! |

Location: Dallas, Texas | Hey everybody, we've fallen off the pace a bit in adding new authors and books lately. Mostly it's because real life has a way of jacking up my plans but also we've spent a lot of time working on site updates and the Genre Lit-Flick list. Check that out if you've not seen it! And now, I'm off on vacation for the next week! My apologies to those of you waiting on book additions. We'll get back on track when I return. Happy reading! |

| I can't remember if these have already been requested, but could you add the Kate Elliott books, Spirit Gate, Shadow Gate, and Traitors' Gate in the Crossroads series, as well as Cold Magic and Cold Fire, which are the first two books in the Spiritwalker Trilogy? I've started reading Spirit Gate, assuming it would already be in the database. Thanks! |
